Objectives

The main product of the Didá is the Girl’s (young women’s) Band, formed exclusively for women. This initiative also originated in the mind of Master Neguinho in unremitting search for tapping into Didá, the power of creation.

The women of Didá have learned to rise above irresponsibility and to conquer their fear of obstacles. They have dared, and today represent in Brazil and other countries, reference to musical and transformative qualities, symbolized by innovative costuming which pays homage to (the persecuted) Afro-Brazilian princess Anastasia, a black warrior who lived in Brazil and who until this day grants miraculous favors for thousand of offices of trust (responsibility). With the blessing of Anastasia the Didá Band has had the opportunity to record with some of the main names of Brazilian popular music like Caetano Veloso, (current Minister of Culture) Gilbert Gil, GAL Costa, Elza Soares, Naná Vasconcelos, Emilio Santiago, Sandra de Sá, Leila Pineiro and Dominguinhos. Didá has also performed with international artists like the principle American gospel chorale "Mount Moriah" and Roby Rosa. Without any doubt, Didá represents in the (Afro-cultural) history of Bahia and Brazil, a new chapter, a turning of the page, to recover for Afro-descended women access to their history, and an awareness of their power to fight for and achieve transformation.

Extending the possibilities of work and income the Didá comes weekly keeping its rehearsals in Praça Tereza Batista, in Pelourinho. In these rehearsals and at other events the women of Didá earn the financial resources needed to participate actively in providing for the sustenance of their families, also defraying the cost of their intellectual development, they help to pay for their courses and college visualizing their future as women, mothers and citizens. It is also in carnival that the Band projects its musical abilities. Among the hundreds of groups (performing at Carnival) Didá is the only exclusively feminine Bloco. In Carnival the influence of the school is extended so that not only 600, but rather 2000, women can bring their children to drink from the cultural fountain of Didá - hearing songs that exalt the Brazilian people, and witnessing the celebration of family. In the Carnival Bloco-Afro there is no charge to the participants (who could not pay anyway). At this time (leading up to Carnival) we participate, along with other social programs, in a great landmark eight day campaign to collect donations of non perishable food - this relates to the International Women’s Day.

There are many concrete benefits and results demonstrating the success of the Didá Educational and Cultural Association:

  • A safer environment for women within the context of social representation
  • Children who communicate more and better
  • An awaking of the senses of leadership and citizenship
  • A wakening of friendly relations and fellowship
